After an advance screening of "Finding Dory," I was invited to participate in a post-film round table podcast hosted by Ian Simmons of Kicking the Seat. I was one of five Chicago film critics chatting about our feelings, opinions, and reactions to "Finding Dory" with tangents on Pixar, Burger King (our lucky location for the podcast), and even "The Gilmore Girls." Ian does outstanding work putting these shows together and I was highly honored to be included. I hope to be a guest again in the new future! Enjoy the show!
Read MoreThis week, I joined my fellow members of the Chicago Independent Film Critics Circle for an advance screening of Disney/Pixar's "Finding Dory." I am proud to be a co-founder and co-director of this fine group. We all took away a bunch of heart and love from the "Finding Nemo" sequel. Enjoy the first takes of yours truly, Gabrielle Bondi of The Young Folks, and Emmanuel Noisette of Eman's Movie Reviews!
Read MoreI attended a press-only screening of "X-Men: Apocalypse" on May 9. I was able to participate in another quick post-film panel with my fellow members and directors of the CIFCC. Allow me to continue to introduce my "Every Movie Has a Lesson" followers to Pamela Powell of Reel Honest Reviews, Jim Alexander of The Movie Blog, Jon Espino of The Young Folks, and Emmanuel Noisette of Eman's Movie Reviews. Enjoy our rants and raves!
Read MoreAs busy I get from time to time, I find that I can't see every movie under the sun, leaving my friends and colleagues to fill in the blanks for me. As poetically as I think I wax about movies on this website as a wannabe critic, sometimes a simple sentence or two from a friend says it all. Sometimes, it inspires me to see the movie too and get back to being my circle's go-to movie guy. Sometimes, they save me $9 and you 800+ words of blathering. In a new review series, I'm opening my site to friend submissions for quick-hit movie reviews. Here is the Stark family with "The Peanuts Movie."

Read MoreSince "Fifty Shades of Grey" has splashed onto the scene as box office juggernaut, grossing over $81 million and counting, I knew this film would and could attract more than one "guest critic." Women are coming out of the Pinterest and beach-read woodwork by the box-wine-load to see this flick. I put the all-call out on Facebook have picked up some sinners and winners. I've got two takers so far. Mr. Shanahan will see you now...

Read MoreThe point man on this advance "Guest Critic" review is her Tina's oldest son, Kerrick. He and his family reside in Bloomington, Indiana. He is 12-going-on-30, so you can imagine the kind of pre-teen handful he fashions himself to be for my friend Tina. He is too smart for his own good, but he backs it up. Kerrick is a band geek, an honor student, and probably types better than both Tina and I combined. I like his style.
