6 Life Lessons We Learned From High School Movies

by Lucy Miranda

Many of us watch movies for entertainment but they are capable of much more. Movies can inspire us to be a better person. They can comfort us with a positive outlook and restore our faith in humanity and everything beautiful. Most importantly, they are an assurance that everything will make sense in the end.

High school movies are one such genre that is delicate, engaging, fun, relatable and entertaining, all at the same time. For years many high school or teen-movies have been made with characters that closely represent how teenagers are in real life. These movies not only connect with us but also teach us some valuable lessons that can help us shape ourselves for better.

Oliver, an expert in theatre studies at GoDissertationHelp told us that he is still a fan of teen movies because they show how these teenage characters find a way through their life and we can too. So let’s discuss today the top six lessons that one can learn from high school movies and make our lives a little better.

#1 From Clueless (1995): You may not always be right

“I’m not a prude, I’m just highly selective.” - Cher

Clueless celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2020 and is still one of the best high school movies with a dose of rom-com and life lessons. The key takeaway from the movie is that if you have got all the privileges of the world, that does not mean that you are always right. The best thing is that it applies to every phase of life. The movie wonderfully portrays how a self-involved, highly-privileged teen girl who thinks she can do whatever she can understands the importance of kindness and how doing good to someone can bring good results to you.

#2: From Five Feet Apart (2019): Be there for your loved ones

“I’m not going far. I’ll always be here. Just an inch away. I promise.”  - Rachael Lippincott

We all can learn a lot from this movie, especially about the life of cystic fibrosis patients. But this movie touches the heart of every viewer for one big reason and that is how important it is to be there for our loved ones.

Silvia, who provides assignment help in Australia to high school students told us about the movie that ‘Social distancing’ norms of the movie are relatable to all of us in the year 2020. But the movie very beautifully showcases how we can be there for the people we care about despite being ‘socially distant’. Well, she is right! It urges us to call our parents, family, friends and loved ones right away and tell them how valuable they are for us.

#3 From Sierra Burgess Is a Loser (2018): Self-Acceptance is the key to life

"Thank you, but I don't need you to fight my battles for me." - Sierra

A teenage girl who finds it difficult to gel-up with the life of high-school. We all have been there! There are times in our lives where we feel we are lost or we are not meant for this world. But just like Sierra realises that all she has to do is be herself as she is ‘enough’, we all need to realise the same for ourselves. Sierra finds that she might make fake friends or escape from reality but in the end, it is her authenticity that will make her happy. That’s one of the biggest life lessons for teenagers.

#4 From The Breakfast Club (1985): Labels are irrelevant

"We're all pretty bizarre. Some of us are just better at hiding it, that's all." - Andrew

A movie that is living through decades and still captivating our hearts, 2020 marks the 30th anniversary of The Breakfast Club. The movie might be old but the life lesson it teaches us is still relevant and that is living past labels. We often judge people by their outer appearance or how they portray themselves. Just like everybody in the movie assumed that Andrew has a great family life but no one knew that he had to torture a kid to appear cool in front of his father. Therefore, instead of just assuming something about someone we should try to understand them.

Assignment assistance expert, George, agreed with us when we asked his life lesson from the movie. He said that everyone is going through something or the other in life. Everyone has a different story and not judging someone is the best lesson from this movie that could set our character from high school to every stage of life.

#5 From To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before (2018): It is okay to be a little old school

"My life was a mess… but I could clean my room."  -Lara Jean

Teenagers today are pacing faster through life. They have access to many things that people of the previous generations could never think of. Most of them pick up their passions and decide careers in their teenage. And so they are in case of friendships and relationships.

But the story of Lara Jean teaches us that it is okay to set your priorities the old school style. She shows how important it is to not lay your relationships on the grounds of false expectations when she lays down a relationship contract with Peter and ensures that they are on the same page.

Samantha, one of the psychology experts at GoAssignmentHelp added a great perspective here. She said that Lara Jean is shown as a bookworm, she loves her family and stays beside them and she is not afraid to accept that. This is something that every teenager should learn from her.

#6 From The Edge of Seventeen (2016): Life can be hard and complicated, but you’ll get through it

“Life's about taking risks. Don't be afraid to put yourself out there.” - Mr Bruner

We asked Rose, Physics expert at MyAssignmentHelp4u if she was complicated as a teenager. She instead asked us to watch Nadine once in this movie and we found a lesson for life. A teenage girl going through so many emotions altogether including insecurity, doubts, jealousy and above that has no idea why is all that happening. She feels betrayed and lonely because her best friend is not available for her anymore and finds it hard to gel-up with others.

But with time she understands that everyone has been dealing with something or the other in their lives and finally finds some stability. She understands the importance of staying true to oneself and how being alone can be a blessing sometimes.

So those were the best six life lessons that one can take away from high school movies. If you haven’t watched these movies, you now have an agenda for the weekend. Other than that, what do you think is the best lesson about life that you learned from a movie? Share it with us and let’s keep the conversation going.
