6 of the Best Engagement Rings You'll Find in Movies

by Lewis Robinson

From elaborate flash mobs to quiet dinners in intimate settings, people choose to propose to each other in a wide variety of ways. One thing that seems to remain constant, though, is the presentation of a ring when asking someone to marry you. You want your proposal to be perfect, like something out of the movies, so shouldn't your ring match? Use a guide from teachjewelry.com, and check out some of the best rings you'll find in the movies to help you get some ideas for what to go with during your own proposal.

1. The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)

Ok, so Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio) wasn't exactly the epitome of an excellent husband to Naomi (Margot Robbie), but he did have excellent taste in engagement rings. In the movie, he proposed with a gigantic yellow diamond. In fact, he was going right along with real-life trends. Yellow diamond engagement rings are some of the most popular among celebrities because of their unique styles and in-your-face color. The likes of Paris Hilton and Heidi Klum are just some of the celebrities who've sported these types of rings.

2. The Great Gatsby (2013)

Another movie that starred Leonardo DiCaprio in 2013 was The Great Gatsby. He wasn't the only star, though. The ring worn by Daisy Buchanan (Cary Mulligan) was another one that shone in the movie. The Tiffany & Co. platinum ring features a cushion-cut halo design that was valued at nearly $4 million. Geometric angles are all the rage with rings and pair well with Art Deco-inspired wedding bands. Although it looks vintage to the people of today, the movie was set in 1922, making this ring extremely modern for the time period.

3. Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953)

Marilyn Monroe rocketed to fame as an actress when she took on the role of Lorelei Lee in 1953, but the ring she wore in the picture was perhaps just as famous at the time. The pear-shaped diamond was one of the first of its kind, not to mention one of the largest ones ever to be featured in a movie at the time. The ring is so famous, in fact, that its worth has increased multiple times since the movie's release. It's even believed that it inspired her famous quote, "diamonds are a girl's best friend."

4. Blue Jasmine (2013)

2013 was a big year for diamond rings in movies, and Jasmine's (Cate Blanchett) ring was no exception in the movie Blue Jasmine. The character was an Upper East Side socialite, which meant Blanchett truly needed to look the part. Costume designer Suzy Benzinger took her inspiration from the wives of men in finance and picked most of the jewelry, including the humongous ring, from Fred Leighton. In fact, the ring and other pieces of jewelry were so valuable that Blanchett had to have an armed bodyguard on set while she filmed.

5. Legally Blonde 2: Red, White, and Blonde (2003)

Reese Witherspoon herself helped with creating the costumes for Elle Woods because she wanted them to stay as true to the costumes in the original movie as possible. One such way she helped was to create some of the prop jewelry, including the pink diamond ring that Woods wore. Remember, there's no rule that says the ring you choose needs to be a traditional color. If your partner is someone who loves bright, bold colors, you can't go wrong with a pink diamond like the way in Legally Blonde 2.

6. Sweet Home Alabama (2002)

Reese Witherspoon's characters are no strangers to fancy proposal rings. Andrew (Patrick Dempsey) proposed to Melanie (Witherspoon) in Tiffany & Co.'s New York showroom as a means of showing her that he will give her whatever it is that her heart desires (it didn't end up desiring him but that's besides the point). Andrew lets her pick out her own ring and Melanie heads straight for the solitaire diamond in a classic Tiffany's setting.

From bright pink diamonds to class Tiffany & Co. cuts, there is something for everyone on the big screen. Use these ideas and what you know about your partner to help you choose the right right to make your proposal as perfect as you imagine it will be.
