MOVIE REVIEW: Silence

But all of those lofty intentions will not be automatically transcendent for everyone.  Let me say it like this as delicately as I can.  The level of your Christian faith, or lack thereof, will formulate your reaction, appreciation, or acceptance of “Silence.”  It is an agonizing personal test for an audience, just the same as it is for the characters on screen.  This will either be a soul-rattling testament or maddening torture.

MOVIE REVIEW: Hacksaw Ridge

It should come as no surprise to anyone who has followed the career path of Mel Gibson, either in front or behind the camera, that "Hacksaw Ridge" rings up the descriptor of "excessive" more than any film to date this year.  "Hacksaw Ridge" is a war film of excessive violence operatically woven into a biopic screen story of excessive hero worship based on a true story of World War II Congressional Medal of Honor winner Desmond Doss.  Both excesses are laid on very thick.  Only half of one of them are worth it.

As much as this new take still feels rehashed on many levels, this sequel is the real deal as an exciting comic book adventure and spectacle.  "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" is ideally suited to be the blockbuster opening act of the summer of 2014.  It indeed does embody a second film that is narrowly better than the first film.
